The training of Martial Arts is always strict, discipline and constant.

Just like any other sport, it has to be respectful to yourself, your partners, the instructor or teacher and the art. Any kind of foolishness creates a mess and brings consequences to the dojo, such as lack of respect, the discipline starts feeling softer and the respect and seriousness of the art itself goes down.

Discipline and respect go hand in hand, but does not mean you don't have to enjoy it, or be happy and show the joy of training. Partners must enjoy their training to be effective and to make joy last.

Having fun does not mean to be disrespectful to our training, dojo or the art. Everything with measure.

We are moving to a new location; Covid has made it hard and sometimes the issues attacking seem unbearable, but The Lord has provided for us with resources to keep moving forward and with great people who support the dojo, our teaching, our training and our faith.

In trial times, put your faith in God, trust there is an answer. You have to do the work, but you have to "listen" what the Lord is telling you to do; is human nature to rebel to unknown, to the unseen; that's faith. Not easy, never easy, to fight human nature and trust, but when is done, the feeling of joy cannot be described. Thank the Lord everyday for what is given to you, even when you do not see it.

Unmovable

Unmovable, standing still until the right time to act shows up. The timing, distance and speed require is all a combination that martial artists learn and practice. Stillness between moves, stillness of the mind while the body moves. In Karate, mokuso meditation practice, brings practitioners to the present moment: time to train true; focus. Stan still, fix your posture, and when is the right time, move. Speed can only be noticed if you are standing still.

Sprit - Mind - Body

Interpretation of this old concept in martial arts of Body, Mind, Spirit to our understanding:

FAITH, complete trust or confidence in someone or something; strong belief in God or in the doctrines based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof; "Blessed are thy that have not seen and yet they believe" John 20:29. It is a good practice to just know things will be ok, maybe not right now as you expected. Remember Faith overcomes Fear.

THOUGHT: an idea or opinion produced by thinking or occurring in the mind. A direction of one's mind. Mental attitude. In Martial Arts our thinking has to be clear and never having "too many minds"; a single mind is a clear perception of what is truth to the practitioner. The mind must be clear in order to control the body's actions. Correct and good decision making is key to success.

ACTION: physical and typically a process of doing something to achieve an aim. The way something is done. The mind or thought should control the physical action. Action without thought can be great but it can also be a disaster. Depending on its repetition. Mastery of movements can overcome the outcome.

In summary: is your faith in God can remain strong in stress, your thought will remain clear and you will make a good action. In conflict you will remain calm. Breathing will help create clarity in mind and body. It is important to pray and practice so you will act in accordance with the training you practice: Spirit/Faith, Mind/Thought, Body/Action.

Character vs Force

CHARACTER: Is define as "Adhering to a standard of moral qualities to an individual; the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual ".

In Martial Arts we "Endeavor to Build Our Character"; how do we practice it? good discipline, good behavior, good manners, good attitude, good etiquette; good standard of practice. Look to do better, look to follow directions, rules, instructions. All building blocks to mold the person you want to become.

Sometimes we think being a Grand Champion is the greatest thing and it is, as long as it doesn't change your character, the essence of who you are, what you were taught. It is a title denoting effort, accomplishment.Success is not always measured by the number of championships you won. My Sensei said: If it changes your character it is probably not good for you.

Challenging your character in martial arts it's difficult but it is the way to control yourself which leads to development of character. Tribulation will challenge your character and it is how you handle this tribulation, how you act, how you react, how you learn from this tribulation, what builds your character.

All the challenges that we are confronted with in day to day basis, are life lessons, but it is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ what gets us through this challenges and tribulations; there should not be worries about approval from others, only from God. Endeavor to build your character. That is a good practice.

Discipline and Faith

Discipline and Faith. Believing in what you are doing is a must, overtime your skill will reach a level of mastery when you have the discipline to improve it. Have disciplined attitude and approach the task with joy and you will have a good outcome.
If you are not satisfied, consider it a learning experience and discipline yourself to work hard. The battle is over when laziness shows up. Faith and discipline get you through negative times; control your mind. The enemy of improvement is boredom, fatigue, lack of concentration and must be overcome.
Technique includes timing, distance, speed along with breath, but technique without faith and discipline will take the longer path to improvement

Katana Fittings

- Tsuka : Hilt. Katana's handle. It is made of hardwood and covered in "same," which is either rayskin or sharkskin. The outside is methodically wrapped in "ito," made of silk, cotton, or sometimes even leather. Inside of this wrapping are twin metal ornaments called "menuki." Being on the opposite sides of the hilt, they function to show where the hands go for tenouchi (grip). The tsuka begins and terminates in two other fittings: the fuchi and kashira (pommel). Towards the upper portion of the hilt is a bamboo peg called "mekugi," pin that holds the entire sword together. Tsuka are within 10-15in long, depending on personal preference of the user.
- Tsuba : guard, guards the user's hand, functioning as quillons on European swords. It is sandwiched between two thin washer-like fittings of copper or brass called "seppa." Tsuba designs, usually seen are "maru gata" style. Other designs include "mokko" (lobed) or "kaku gata" (square).
- Saya : sheath is made of hardwood and covered in flacquer. Black is the most common and traditional color seen on katana (due to Edo-period uniform), although other colors have become popular in modern times. Most he saya's opening at the top is called "koiguchi". The long cord tied to the saya is called "sageo," affixed to the "kurikata" (retaining knob). The color of the sageo either matches or complements the color of both the tsuka ito and saya.

Wooden Sword Practice

Bokken (wooden sword) seminar. Timing, distance and speed are essential when working with partners. Joy of training and no competing with each other shows the attitude of gratitude for the lesson, the teaching and the time and patience the instructors put in the dojo.

Just as seen on TV and movies, wooden sword bokken also known as bokuto, is use for save practice of katana sword. It is not a sparring weapon, but is intended to be used in kata and to acclimate the student to the feel of a real sword. Although it is hard to determine precisely when the first Bokken appeared due to the nature of secrecy in ancient martial arts training, the oldest Bokken known to have been used as training tools date from the Edo period. The use of the katana, in its basics, differs very little from what the ancient Samurai would have practiced.

TE NO OUCHI: Katana Grip

TE NO UCHI: Gripping the katana In Iaido and kumitachi, gripping the sword is obviously a vital component in its usage. However, this is also a common mistake, which can often result in poor form and strain on the body as a result. This is why proper tenouchi is very important during this practice.

When gripping the tsuka (hilt) the student should start with the right hand closing the little finger upon it, then close the ring and middle fingers following. The thumb and middle finger should touch; I personally like to think of it as you and your spouse/significant other: never separate. The index finger plants on top of that union, like "putting God on top of it."

Upon completion of the grip, there should be at least an inch between the koko (skin webbing between thumb and index finger) and the sword's tsuba (guard). The same process should be applied to the left hand at the base of the tsuka. The little finger should be curled around the edge of the kashira (sword pommel).

Upon completion of tenouchi, all pressure should be at the thumbs and little fingers when the sword is in use. This pressure should also be applied when cutting. While doing so, the sword should initially be raised outwards, like casting a fishing pole.

As it completes its cutting arc, the student should lightly twist the hands on the grip like wringing water out of a towel (with the thumbs pushing inwards and remaining fingers pulling outwards). This being done, the cuts will be very effective, and the sword's blade will make a "whoosh" sound each time regardless of whether or not a bo-hi (groove) is present in it. It is also important for the student to remember to have good posture by keeping the back straight during each cut in both kata and tameshigiri (test cutting). Leaning into the cuts is not only bad form, but for the samurai in feudal Japan, it left open an attack of opportunity from his opponent.

By having proper grip and good posture in sword practice, the student will not only make excellent progress in the technique but also employ and maintain safety in the dojo.

True Karate-Do places weigh upon spiritual rather than physical matters. In daily life, one's body and mind be trained and developed in a humbled character but in difficult times respond correctly and act with just essence.
Karate is an understanding of basic (kihon) blocks, kicks, stances, strikes with various parts of the body. Proper breath and always centered in action.
KARA is the action and techniques that permit one to defend oneself with bare hands, fight with no weapons. Inwards humble, outwards gentle; strong character to do what is right. Immovable and dominant spirit. Karate develops courage, courtesy, humility, self-control and discipline. Confidence is develop with repetition. When Karate is well practiced, practitioners are capable of inflicting damage to any opponent with one blow, one kick.
TE means "hand". True Karate develops the hand; combined with the spirit and clear thoughts, good discipline and strong character, placing God in your heart, you will do well.
DO means "way". Our way is Christian way of Karate. Similar in the spirit of Asian Karate, we name the Spirit of God the Father, the son Jesus Christ and the Divine Holy Spirit as our belief system in life.
Karate is a discipline and a way of life that must become a lifestyle.
In our training, we practice kihon basics (fundamental basics), kata (form, pattern of moves) and kumite (all applied free sparring, combat and self-defense).

Aikido - flowing moves

Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

There are basically two types of fall:

1. against your will, you could stumble and fall off or when you are being thrown by your partner and not ready in the mind (off guard). Resisting the fall most times it will leave you a little sore, God willing no major injury.

2. or at your will. Willing to fall, enjoying it without worries and free from corruption.

As a practitioner of Christian Aikido, being guided by the Holy Spirit. Sincere fall, relaxed, composed.

Do you hit the mat? or do you absorb the mat? On break-fall, yes, you hit the mat so you can absorb the shock of the high fall. Still composed in the mind.

As Shihan, to describe this motion I use the term heart-felt, sincere, beautiful to see in the eye of the spectator, to see the gentle and grace of the fall. When falling, most feel embarrassed. Some people think that falling in daily life is a defeat. In Aikido, you fall to save yourself; when and if you fall, relax, breath, go with it, protect your head. The tension and hard resistance does the damage. Basically it is fear, very common to feel. Falling is a practice we prefer not to do in daily life.

In Aikido you have to love it. Understand this. Get formal instruction before you begin the practice of falling; in time you will improve. To understand, we must go back to our childhood, run and roll on the ground. It might be considered immature, however, if the mind and body absorb that relaxed fun feeling and dynamics, it will be able to respond when you actually fall.

In Aikido we love the fall or roll because it has been repeated many times. The practice of rolling is no joke, if you injure yourself, stop. If you just get a little sore, it’s ok; stay with the practice of Ukemi, the art of Aikido rolling.

What are Martial Arts?

Martial arts are an ancient method of training mind, body and spirit to act as one. Martial arts practitioners strive for harmony, but also learn effective self-defense techniques. Most martial arts originated in Asia and include Karate, Kung Fu, Jiujitsu, Aikido, Taekwondo, Judo and Muay Thai among others and their different styles.

Fitness is an element to all martial arts classes: warm ups with jumping jacks, push ups and stretches are common, and the movements of the martial art itself often challenge your muscles and cardiovascular system. Martial arts help instill mental focus in your child, giving the ability to concentrate on a task and see it through to its conclusion. The discipline that is taught in the dojo in regard to uniforms, customs and techniques often translates into other areas of life, including school and household chores.

Martial arts are all about respect. Punching, kicking, throwing and locking are all secondary to the respect that is shown form the moment you walk into a dojo. Students learn to bow to the instructors who came before them, and to their current instructors. They also learn to treat other students as they wish to be treated. Quality instructors press upon the respect issue regularly and instruct students to practice respect for self, parents, teachers and peers at every opportunity. Little things should never be over looked, as simple as answering "osu Sensei" as well as: yes, Mom, yes Dad, yes Sir. Simple things in the training become part of daily life.

Martial arts practitioners are generally confident. Working through a martial art and the belt ranking system gives a measurable goal to follow that are realistic to attain. The sense of accomplishment by mastering a new technique or graduating to a new belt follows the practitioner for the rest of their lives, whether adult or child.

Pressure to succeed is high in all levels and ages. By achieving measurable goals, practitioners learn to set standards to get to their goals.

Martial Arts are not only a way to fitness but a philosophy, a path.

Follow One Course Until Successful

All Martial Arts need to be presented with good attitude, Self-control, discipline and belief; that's the sincerity of training that can never be overlooked. Attitude must be controlled and we can if we practice.
In the martial arts community, the word KIME is given many interpretations: "explosive attack, maximum power, shortest time"; all good, however, whatever that word means to you, the responsibility of controlled, accurate, sincere action, is still yours. No corruption from the physical to the mental and even spiritual action.
Identification of God the Father, the son Jesus Christ and the Divine Holy Spirit, training as a child of God, is a big responsibility.
Train with sincere faith and always good attitude. Stay FOCUS (Follow One Course Until Successful).

Is the mind in the head or the heart?

The teaching of Karate and Aikido Las Vegas School incorporates a Christian belief system.

Is the mind in the head or the heart?

Great question. At our Christian Martial Arts school we teach “Put God in your heart first and do the work”, meaning a heartfelt action whether a bow or basic Karate or Aikido technique. An interpretation of “sincerity” is “without corruption”; a sincere, heartfelt action comes from the heart.

Thinking too long slows the response of an action, therefore, through Faith and Disciplined sincerity, our action in Karate and Aikido become pure, clean, with no doubt and that leads to speed. These knowledge and training takes time, just like cultivating a plant, martial arts need to be cultivated just like a plant: starts with a seed on good soil, time and good care will produce good fruit.

My Karate training started in 1969 and Aikido training in 1999; opened our dojo in Las Vegas in 1994. I have been cultivating my seed with care and dedication. Our students do well in life, making good decisions and controlling themselves to always present good attitude and character everywhere all the time. Training always inside and outside the dojo; practicing the Christian way, inside and outside the dojo that is how are Christian based training differs from others; we thank our Lord Jesus Christ for everything and everyone. We pray before class and thank God for the opportunity to train.

Christian Martial Artist

If you are a Christian Martial Artist, whatever truth is in your heart you must present it in life. A daily practice of PEACE.
Jesus Christ said "You shall love your neighbor as yourself". Treat others the way you want to be treated. The way you greet someone is very important; it sets a certain standard of mutual respect.
In the Martial Arts study, how your Sensei speaks to you and how you speak and act towards your teacher should be with great respect. That is the love that needs to be shown.
Love rejoices in truth; you can never lose it. Ask yourself why am I acting this way?, why am I speaking this way? check yourself so you can never lose your martial art practice which is based on RESPECT and self-control.
If you are a Christian, act like it; if you are a Martial Artist, act like you have good character and good discipline. Forget the fight unless is absolutely necessary. Martial Artist are taught self-defense, peace.
"Karate ni sente nashi", there is no first strike in Karate. It will take a practitioner some time to understand the true meaning of the well know precept. It will make sense once you as Martial Artist, put the time and the understanding.

Who Is Sensei?

The word SENSEI, in general proper form, is use after a person's name and means "teacher". Literally is translated as "person born before another". In Karate & Aikido, it would mean "One who has the most experience in the art form". Students must realize a good Sensei will point out your weaknesses with no regard for your feelings or even give you a chance to explain yourself. As a good student, you must accept the guidance and correction with joy.

Some schools teach and change the way of correction for fear to lose the student; they may quit. That is not a good way for a truthful Sensei to teach. Sensei knows because through his training, he has felt the same and experience the same things that the student is feeling, therefore, be humble, love your dojo, love your training as difficult as it may seem and love your Sensei.

Peaceful Warrior

Warrior of Peace

In Latin: Si vis pacem, para bellum ; it says: "pray for peace, prepare for battle"; that in its self, is what might be needed to have peace . As I am a Christian Martial Artist practicing a warrior Art of Peace. One can have a peaceful life, most of the time we create our own problems. The pacifist and the warrior both seek peace and fight for it, in different ways.

Pray for peace and then practice. Slow to anger, strong faith, well disciplined, courageous but stay humble.

Love is the greatest of all practices; it is a hard practice that will take a life time to seek its perfection of (love). The JOY of good practice, knowing what is right, and not getting tired of doing it; seeking the perfection of what ever you are doing is a great practice.

The power of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the strength behind the action; as practitioner of Martial Arts you are
just the instrument of God, a child of God, and you must act like it.

Karate Student

What kind of Karate student are you?

Karate is not just what we do in the dojo, nor is it just self-defense. An important part of Karate training is applying the lessons we learn to our daily lives.

And, for me, Karate should not be the best thing that you do. If you are good at Karate and bad at everything else, then what kind of Karate student are you? But if you are great at everything else and good at Karate, then what a Karate student you are!

As a "Sensei", an important part of my "job" is to encourage students to strive for the best in their lives. Karate training is hard. Life is much harder. If you can learn to discipline yourself for the rigors of Karate training, then perhaps you can apply that same discipline to other aspects of your life. If you can be polite and respectful in the dojo, then you can do the same in school and work. Karate should help you in your life.

Weakness

Find your weakness and you will solve your problems. Identify your weakness then practice to improve it; once it improves, it will no longer be weak but it will become a strength. Apply this practice to all things. Once you have identify and practice correction you will see a good change; not easy to achieve but very effective. All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of one candle.
That light overcomes fear, fear is the most common of our weaknesses. Fear to many things but usually fear of change. Remember the Lord Jesus Christ when your fear comes out. He never changes. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will conquer that fear, that weakness. Practice with faith in what you do and you will overcome that fear of failure; believe in what you do, train with confidence; stand strong! strong in what you do, strong in what you believe, strong in who you are, strong in your practice. Complaining and excuses work against faith and believe in your training and your learning.
Look for a lesson in everything. Patience and discipline are required. Discipline teaches us to practice by a certain standard; set your standard of practice. Respect authority. Equal importance to everything, every detail. Respect to each move, not one is more important than the other. The smallest detail cannot be less important than the largest. The first kata is no less important the highest kata you know.
Keep everything in balance.
